Thoughts on parting

I realize that in my life, there has been quite a few partings that really got to me. Usually, it will be someone who I really regret not having spent more time getting to know and also that I know that the chances of ever meeting up in future is close to zero. And of course, these are also great individuals who have in some way really lit up my life. Might be something small, might be just a feeling, but somehow I just know that life with them is better than life without them (haha... which is not something that we can say about everyone eh?).

Anyway the thing is that I am usually less affected when I part with friends whom I am fairly sure that our paths will cross again. Hmm... am I taking those friends for granted? Maybe I should really appreciate each moment that I have with all my wonderful friends more. Now that a lot of people are getting married and starting their families.... perhaps it might not be so easy to meet up in the future as well... Not that I dun treasure the time I spend with my friends, but it's just the thought that perhaps we might not meet again didn't really seem to cross my mind when in reality such things are really hard to say (haha... you never know when you could just trip and drown in a toilet bowl... haha... what a way to go...). Anyway I am really glad that I manage to catch up with a lot of friends during my trip back to Singapore. Sad that I didn't manage to meet a few that I had hoped to.... but let's try again next year yah....

Wishing all my friends a great week ahead. Take care :)

First day back in office

Got back to Gainesville on Friday morning. Haha... my flight from LA to Orlando was overbooked and they were looking for volunters to catch the later flight. Since I wasn't no rush, I offered my seat and got a free return ticket to anywhere in the US. After all, as an industrial engineer, I totally adore the concept of overbooking and I just wanna do my part to ensure that it works in practice, just as how we claim it works in practise. Haha... Anyway the best part was that at the end of the day, there were still empty seats, which means that I kinda got that free return ticket for "nothing".

Anyway, was looking forward to getting back to work after sleeping a lot a lot the past 3 days. Haha... was up by 3am on Monday and I headed to office after a quick shower. Hehe... so excited. Finished up the work that I was suppose to do in Singapore and also manage to meet my supervisor and had a fruitful discussion.

But then, life aint a bed of roses. When I got back to office, I bumped into my secretary (she serves the lab that I am based in, she is the pretty lady in white in the picture below) and she told me that it was her last day. At first I thought that she was taking a summer break, but I soon realized that she is has quitted her job and will not be coming back. I was like so sad. She is a lovely lady who is always so helpful. In addition, she is also very resourceful too. Therefore you can say that she has both the heart and the ability to aid us in terms of our administrative needs. Seriously, I have never seen a better secretary, equal only to Katherine (haha... only the Bukomites will know who I am talking about). Anyway, that just means that she is really good.

Hehe... to be honest, the first thought that came to my mind was that "wah, it is going to be so much more harder to find copier paper and other office supplies". But hor... I soon realise that there was a lot more that I am gonna miss. No more morning greetings... No more cheerful smile each morning..... One less lady to give and recieve chocolates from. Haha... actually she is probably one of the few ladies who actually gives me chocolate. So sweet hor.... Sigh... The mornings just aint gonna be the same again.

Foundation or concealer first?

Recently, I have been asking my female friends the question above. And different people gave me different answers. Haha... and of course, a few smart ones gave me the "catch-all" answer, "it depends". Along the course, I also lean that there are different types of foundation and concealer as well. Wow... haha... I just use an all-purpose moisturer that's all. Hehe... although I do have a different one for Singapore and Florida.

Anyway this topic just came up over dinner with a friend and it suprises me that there is a suprising lack of uniformity in the answers that my female friends gave. Hmm... Interesting... Anyway wikiHow says that we should put the foundation first then concealer after that. The rationale is that in this way, u dun use too much. Haha... err... I dun really get it but you can read up more on http://www.wikihow.com/Apply-Makeup

Any further insights to help this poor confused boy clarify his doubts will be greatly appreciated.

Disturbing meal

Two days ago, I needed to do some stuff at one of the Methodist schools (not saying which one) in Singapore and so I caught a burger and fries at one of the cafes in the school. It was very nice to be back in a Methodist educational institute again. Just walking around the school and sitting at the cafe really made me felt very nice (although this was not one of the schools that I have attended, but hey all Methodist schools have the same "feel" eh).

However, while I was eating my burger, I noticed that the owner/manager of the cafe was using vulgarities (he used "wtf" in Hokkien and "damn your mum" in Chinese) when communicating with the other cafe staff. Then I was like how could the school allow this?! I don't deny that it is inevitable that our young kids will be exposed to such language outside or even among their friends, but shouldn't the school management be concerned about the language that their staff and affiliates use within it's compound?

As someone who has had 12 years of education in 3 Methodist schools, I find this incident highly disturbing. Oh dear, I have become one of the those "public" who like to complain to the school about every small little thing.

Disturbing email

I just received this email from NUSS (National Universiy of Singapore Society) about some private party at some club. Here's the description of the party:

It’ll be sizzling hot this summer! Come to our private AU CHIC party, organized exclusively for our young graduates & friends - happening Friday, 4 July @ Gotham Penthouse, Singapore’s premier nightspot. Private party starts @ 7.30pm. Come early to make new friends and connect with old buddies!

We’re talking about immense fun with loads of sexy babes and hunks!

Get into the groove with Gotham’s Odyssey RAW Tour. Armed with tight, flexible bodies, cheeky demeanours and pumped up dance moves to set your mood for a hot and sexy party till late!

If we want to go into how wrong this whole thing is, we could probably go on for quite long. But let's cut to the chase. I personally think that this invite just gives me the impression that NUSS is trying too hard to be something that it isn't, and that is totally off. Coolness is about having your own identity, and is not about being something that you are not. Come on, enticing graduates with "tight flexible bodies" is not exactly something that I consider to be of good taste.

I am probably being overly critical of the organization with just one email. A quick visit to the NUSS website revealed that there are a lot more other activties which were somewhat more fitting.

Ok, I can understand why NUSS may feel the need to organise such parties because partying has, in recent times, become a common feature among undergraduates (although not so much among the graduates. Ever heard of people saying that they are too old to cheong? Food for thought eh... NUSS), but the thing is that if you wanna do something, do it right.

Beauty: Natural or made-up. Who cares? I dun.

One thing that I love hanging out with my friends is that we often get to discuss interesting BGR problems. Here's another one.

Yesterday, my friend highlighted to me that some ladies are only pretty because of their makeup. You strip away the makeup and they will look at most average, if not below average. But then the thing is this. Why are some people so adversed to things that are "manually enhanced" (i.e. artifical, which is a term that I dun like). People complain that our Sentosa beaches are man-made. They cannot appreciate girls that only look good with makeup. There are many different types of beauty and perhaps there are certain types of beauty that only these ladies (e.g. ladies with flatter features) can create.

Personally, I like to think a lot about things. But when it comes to beauty, perhaps we should all be more appreciative and less critical.

Btw, the discussion reminded me of a King Arthur story, The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnelle. A synopsis of it can be found on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wedding_of_Sir_Gawain_and_Dame_Ragnelle

If you suck at dating, go for the pretty one

Here's another interesting BGR concept that I just came across and modified upon.

Everyone needs attention and approval. Some more, some less. Might not be that far-fetched to say that attractive people might need more (thinking along the lines that it may be their need for attention that motivates them to upkeep their appearance and thus their above average attractiveness). Of course the previous statement is sweeping, but ah yeah I dun wanna dwell on the details lah.... Just wanna share a rough flow of the thoughts that just came to me.

Anyway it's often easier to attract (or at least strategize an approach to attract)someone who is highly dependent on attention and approval. Which then leads me to the idea that it might be easier to go after the pretty girl or handsome guy, provided you use the right approach.

Well at least my experiences in life does not make me think that there is reason to doubt the hypothesis I have just made. Thoughts and comments?
